“I also intend that when you finish graduate school you are not grabbing for crumbs based on what academic institution wants to hire and tokenize and overwork an under-represented person with your specialties, but rather that you will be able to choose to continue your passionate inquiry on your own terms in ways that prioritize and support strategies of power for the communities you love.”-Alexis Pauline Gumbs

on funerals, and the like…

Seeing family I haven’t seen for so many years was kinda surreal.  I’m glad that I was able to reconnect w/ everyone, and hope that this encounter, however under tragic circumstances, will lead to a deeper connection and relationship w/ them ongoing.

iareconscious:

A net friend, I randomly hit up in gchat said she was in NYC… Her aunt passed away, so she’s with family.

I shared with her some thoughts.. My lil rant on the events surrounding funerals…

Over the years I’ve come into an interesting appreciation for funeral services and things that surround the event.

I honestly feel it is definitely a celebration of life.

Much can be learned. And your mind definitely goes over a train of thought that you generally do not visit until you’re part of this type of situation…

Like anything it’s simply a matter of what you can take from the experience.
It’s a part of life. It’s great if you can grow from it. Or dig a lil deeper.
Seeing that I have not the most common way to address ‘death’ for a westerner I have to make adjustments when communicating my feelings about these things with others in respect to how they exercise their own. I also have to remind myself it is just fine to feel as I do. People have a way of trying to convince you that their way is the ‘right’ way. There is no right way. That’s a whole other mess of conversation, save for a later date.
Don’t let the world question whether or not you have feelings, if you so happen to express those feelings that you do have in an unconventional way. No one has to understand it but you. ;)
