(Un)occupy Albuquerque Connects Corporate Greed to Fight for Native Land
If this is a movement for ALL people - we need to resist being scared of what we don’t understand about one another. In fact, for those of us who feel like we don’t understand, we should probably interrogate why we DONT know what these folks are speaking to.
We all know that there were people here when America was “discovered.” Many of us have heard of Reconsider Columbus Day. And some of us think of the third Thursday in November as “Thanks-taking,” despite the fairytale we were taught as children.
As descendants of colonizers, slaves and/or the colonized, we cannot ignore these REAL lived experiences of our friends, loved ones and comrades. If we can reconsider Columbus Day, we can reconsider how we “occupy” or don’t. For the New Mexican folks resisting this challenge to have their eyes WIDE open rather than succumb to the impulse to focus only on what matters to them personally - push yourself, this is worth it.
Every movement has to evolve, grow more complete, and many times, that means that a name must change in order to represent accordingly. -[bLaK.]
