March: To Build Peace

Recognizing the impact levied on their communities when the lives of young people are senselessly and prematurely taken, students and staff at the East Oakland Life Academy School launched a “Season of Peace-Building,” which lasted from Martin Luther King Jr. Day (1/16/12) to Cesar Chavez Day (3/30/12). The young leaders and their supporters participated in a 74-day fast relay and facilitated a community “Peace Pledge.”

Primarily a symbolic gesture, organized to spread a message of “Peace,” these young leaders also see their message as a directive for the larger community. They understand that “stopping the violence completely” is nearly impossible. Their efforts, however, demonstrate that even a symbolic act like their fasting, the fasting of their friends - and in the view of their larger communities - is still proactive, contagious and ultimately contributes consciousness raising.

And while this effort is local to Oakland in focus, in the wake of the national and international focus on the deaths of Trayvon Martin & Shaima Alawadi, this effort couldn’t appear any more timely and necessary.

Join youth organizers from East Oakland Life Academy School’s Young Men’s Circle (Be a Man – BAM) and the Young Women’s Empowerment Group (Real Ambitious Women) as they celebrate bringing their ”Season of Peace” fast to a close - Friday March 30, 2012 - in East Oakland. United Roots youth music artists will perform as a part of the community celebration.
